Arson investigation after fire at derelict Nore pub, St George’s Avenue, Sheerness

Officers are investigating a suspected arson following a blaze at a derelict pub.

Four fire engines attended the incident at the former Nore boozer in St George’s Avenue, in Sheerness just after 4pm on Friday (June 14).

A height vehicle and a bulk water carrier were also deployed to put out the flames and make the area safe.

The police said: “Officers are investigating a suspected arson at a derelict property in St George’s Avenue, Sheerness.

“Police attended the incident at 4.09pm on Friday 14 June 2024, along with Kent Fire and Rescue Service. “

A spokesperson for the fire and rescue service said on Saturday morning: “Firefighting operations are now complete at the scene of a fire involving a derelict building on St George’s Avenue, Sheerness.

“The fire was fully extinguished, and crews made sure that all remaining hot spots were dampened down.

“There were no reported injuries.”

This is the second time there has been a fire at the building in three years.

In March 2022, four crews were called to tackle a blaze there.

The Nore closed in 2012 and was turned into a restaurant called Cheema’s but changed its name to Alexander’s in 2017 before closing a final time in 2019.

The ambulance service has been contacted for a comment.
