An educational programme created by West Yorkshire Police to improve children’s understanding of risks, citizenship and the law is to be made available in Bedfordshire.

Bedfordshire Police is the first force to purchase access to Pol-Ed – a suite of educational resources created by subject matter experts to assist teachers of children aged five to 18.

By purchasing the rights to use Pol-Ed, teachers in Bedfordshire will soon be able to take advantage of free materials on the programme’s website (www.pol-ed.co.uk) which are now being used by more than 90 per cent of schools in West Yorkshire in Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) lessons covering topics like consent, bullying, grooming, toxic culture and balancing freedom and the law.

More than 60,000 pupils in schools across West Yorkshire have had a lesson involving Pol-Ed resources since the programme launched nearly three years ago, and this number continues to grow as more schools sign up.

The Chief Constable of West Yorkshire Police, John Robins QPM DL, said:

“Pol-Ed has been enthusiastically received by so many schools across West Yorkshire and it’s fantastic to now see its use spreading to other areas of the country.

“The feedback we have received suggests that it has assisted greatly with pupils’ educational progress and keeping them safe, and I believe that schools in Bedfordshire will see similar benefits.

“I would like to praise Bedfordshire Police for being the first force to formally join the Pol-Ed programme. Their foresight will help Pol-Ed to continue to evolve and keep more children safe.”

Chief Inspector Jim Goldsmith, of Bedfordshire Police, said:

“Bedfordshire Police are excited to have the opportunity to branch out further into schools by working with Pol-Ed to provide resources to students in schools across the county.

“Education, as the most important tool in crime prevention, is a key priority to our force. This is reflected in our operational and funding strategies and Pol-Ed is an extremely valuable asset that is guaranteed to help us move forward as a force, engage with our communities and particularly with younger people.”
