British and Irish Lions vs South Africa LIVE: Second test latest score and updates in Cape Town

British and Irish Lions in numbers

The British and Irish Lions look to take the tour series with victory in the second Test over South Africa in Cape Town. A brutal first Test saw Warren Gatland’s men emerge with a storming victory after rallying in the second-half.

And now the pressure is on the Springboks to respond, though there is great tension ahead of the second meeting after comments from Boks captain Siya Kolisi, who claimed he felt disrespected by referee Nic Berry: “I didn’t feel respected and I feel I wasn’t given a fair opportunity.”

Kolisi’s comments and those of Mzwandile Stick have fanned the flames before kick-off, with Lions centre Robbie Henshaw maintains the camp is anticipating a wounded South Africa to move the ball more in what promises to be an emotional encounter.

“It’s going to be a massive challenge for us again. They’re going to be emotionally driven,” Henshaw told reporters. “Backs to the wall, they’re a dangerous team. And we know that. They’re going to be well up for it. We just need to be ready to match their power and the fire they’re going to bring. They might want to play a bit more, have their dangerous men get more touches on the ball. We need to be ready for that. There could be some new trick plays, things we haven’t seen.”

Follow live updates from Cape Town in the second Test with South Africa in a must-win scenario and Gatland’s Lions one win away from greatness.

YELLOW CARD! Cheslin Kolbe is sent to the sin bin! South Africa 3-6 Lions, 25 minutes

It’s yellow. On balance, about the right decision. Kolbe joins van der Merwe on the naughty step, with one wing suddenly looking very bare.

“I’m very happy to keep going with yellow cards, or even further,” says O’Keeffe to the captains. “We are not talking right now, Siya and Alun, I am being clear with my message.”

Tom Curry and Maro Itoje had towered over Kolbe in fury, with the South African’s teammates arriving swiftly to support him. There is nothing else worth looking at in depth, rules Ben O’Keeffe, so it will just be a single judgement…

Kolbe has his eyes on the ball but Murray has leapt high above him, and fallen on his front over the top of him, extending an arm to save his face. Kolbe didn’t jump, which will not count in his favour – he was never in a realistic position to catch the ball.

The officials appear to have come to a decision on that, and now will look at the fracas that followed.

Stolen! Pilfered in the air and back on the Lions’ side. A crucial lineout grab from the Lions and they clear their lines.

Oh dear! Conor Murray goes tumbling over the top of a chasing Cheslin Kolbe and this looks nasty! We are going back upstairs, but the players are going to have a proper scuffle first. Tom Curry has charged in to start this – that may well be looked at, too.

YELLOW CARD! Duhan van der Merwe is sent to the sin bin! South Africa 3-6 Lions, 23 minutes

This will be yellow. Van der Merwe trips Kolbe long after the wing had collected a bobbling ball, and Ben O’Keeffe is left with little option. The referee goes to his pocket and sends van der Merwe for a ten-minute sit down.

Van der Merwe may claim he was trying to fly-hack the loose ball, but he followed through quite nastily on Kolbe. The Lions drop to 14 players; Handre Pollard finds the touchline on the edge of the Lions’ 22.

Is that a trip? I think it is. South Africa are loose in possession with Handre Pollard throwing a curiously inaccurate pass, but as Cheslin Kolbe collects he might have caught a stray leg from Duhan van der Merwe. The officials are going to have a look…

Pieter-Steph du Toit is going off! Wow. A huge blow for South Africa in this first half as du Toit is led from the field. He landed on his arm in a tackle from Duhan van der Merwe in the opening minutes and has looked uncomfortable ever since, and the blindside is going to have to go off.

He looks distraught, and in real discomfort. That might please him – South Africa destroy the Lions scrum to win a penalty. Kwagga Smith is on.

We suspected there would be plenty of kicking and this opening quarter has been true to type, the Lions twice getting up well to contest high kicks, first Duhan van der Merwe winning one back and then Dan Biggar’s bomb causing Willie Le Roux all sorts of problems in the backfield. He fumbles backwards but the South Africans have to scramble to cling on.

Penalty to the Lions? No! Jack Conan appeared in a strong position over the ball but Ben O’Keeffe said he already had it and was wishing to milk the infringement, so when the ball fails to emerge it will be a South African scrum to restart.

MISSED PENALTY! South Africa 3-6 Lions, 19 minutes

From the left, Handre Pollard to level things…

Not to be! He drags it ever so slightly to the left and it drifts by.
