Gavin Whyte arrives as Hull City sign Northern Irish international from Cardiff City
Northern Ireland international Gavin Whyte has joined Hull City on loan for the rest of the League One season, to help boost the Tigers promotion hopes.
Whyte arrives from Championship club Cardiff City where his outings have been restricted this season under boss Neil Harris.
The 24-year-old has played just seven times for City this season and was an unused substitute in last Sunday’s 1-0 FA Cup defeat at Nottingham Forest, having been signed for £2m by former Bluebirds boss Neil Warnock and handed a four-year contract in 2019 after impressing for Oxford United.
Tigers boss Grant McCann had stepped up his interest in signing a winger after seeing Hakeeb Adelakun recalled from his loan spell by Bristol City earlier this month.
Under-pressure Cardiff boss Neil Harris revealed at his pre-match press conference on Thursday afternoon ahead of Saturday’s game with Norwich City once a new arrival was confirmed, he would sanction the release of a winger, which we know to be Whyte.

“I said I certainly didn’t want anyone to leave the club unless we were bringing someone in,” Harris said.
“There’s every chance that someone might be leaving within the next 24 hours on a loan move because we’re getting somebody in and I certainly wouldn’t want to lose somebody without bringing somebody in.
“We’re waiting to see at the moment. I won’t say too much more on that because I don’t want to talk unfairly about other people’s players.”
Earlier this week, a source close to Whyte spoke of his desire to remain in the Welsh capital, telling the Belfast Telegraph he was keen to fight for his place.
“There has been interest from League One clubs to go out on loan, but Gavin would prefer to stay at Cardiff City.
“He has another two and a half years on his contract, is quite happy with life in Cardiff and is in no rush to leave.”
News about Whyte comes after Hull Live confirmed on Thursday that the club are trying to sign former Arsenal youngster Dan Crowley from Birmingham City, having agreed an 18-month deal for midfielder Jordan Flores earlier in the week, while Jordy de Wijs has completed a move away from the KCOM Stadium, joining QPR.
