Inquest opens into death of grandad Karl Saffy

An inquest has opened into the death of a 57-year-old man who died following an incident in the Penycae area of Wrexham.

Farmhand and grandfather Karl Saffy, of Stanley Grove, Ruabon, died on August 23 at Wrexham Maelor Hospital after an alleged attack in the Cristionydd area of Penycae.

John Gittins, coroner for North Wales east and central, told the inquest opening on Tuesday that a Home Office pathologist had found Mr Saffy had suffered trauma to a major artery in the neck (or vertebral artery trauma).

He adjourned a full inquest to a date to be set due to ongoing legal proceedings.

Father and son David Wayne Williams, 52, and Luke Daniel Williams, 24, both of Trem y Gardden, Penycae, appeared via video link from HMP Berwyn at Mold Crown Court on Tuesday morning charged with Mr Saffy’s murder.

They are yet to enter pleas to the murder charge.

A provisional trial date has been set for March 7, 2022.
