THE prison where paedo rocker Ian Watkins was stabbed in the neck by inmates is one of the most dangerous in Britain.

The Lostprophets front man – jailed for 35 years in 2013 for 13 offences against children – was taken hostage by three other lags, before being “roughed up” and shanked.

A source told The Sun: “He was screaming and was obviously terrified and in fear of his life.”

The siege at HMP Wakefield only ended when specially-trained riot officers hurled stun grenades into the cell to free Watkins from his captors.

He was said to be in a serious condition in Leeds General Infirmary and underwent life-saving surgery following Saturday’s attack.

Dubbed “Monster Mansion”, HMP Wakefield is home to 750 of the nation’s most violent criminals – predominantly sex offenders and serial killers.

Vile clientele include four-time murderer Robert Maudsley and Jeremy Bamber, who massacred three generations of his family in 1985.

The Cat A men’s lock-up in West Yorkshire also houses Indonesian Reynhard Sinaga, considered to be Britain’s most prolific rapist.

He would lure his victims to his flat in Manchester where he sedated and raped them before boasting of his sexual conquests on WhatsApp.

The PhD student was caged in 2020 for a minimum of 30 years for sexually assaulting up to 200 men, this was later raised to 40 years.

Each wing of the prison can house 160 inmates with cells containing hard iron beds.

The prison was inspected in October and November 2022, receiving “reasonably good” in three out of four of its healthy prison criteria: safety, respect, and rehabilitation.

Only in “purposeful activity”, for instance having enough time outside their cells to exercise, work and learn, was Wakefield substandard.

The report said: “Some aspects of the prison’s infrastructure were showing their age, but in general the prison was clean and well-maintained…

“And nearly all prisoners were housed in individual and well resourced cells. A continuing strength of the prison was the quality of staff-prisoner relationships.

“The staff at Wakefield were competent and confident, despite many being relatively inexperienced.”

The prison is where mass murderer Harold Shipman spent his final days.

The former GP was sentenced to life in 2000 for killing 15 patients under his care over three decades through fatal medical doses or prescribing abnormal amounts of drugs.

The monster – who hung himself in 2004 aged 57 – may have killed as many as 250 people during his killing spree.

Welsh rocker Watkins was jailed after a shocking trial for offences including the attempted rape of a baby.

Watkins, whose band sold more than 3.5 million albums, filmed himself committing sex acts on a baby boy the day after Lostprophets final album Weapons was released.

The fiend claimed at Cardiff Crown Court he could not remember the sickening attacks because he was a “heavy user” of crystal meth at the time.

His two co-defendants – fans who were the mothers of victims – were caged for 14 and 17 years each.
