Two new restaurants have opened at a popular tourist spot.

Le Coq, and Sail Box, are the latest to join the line-up at Folkestone harbour arm.

Le Coq offers rotisserie chicken while Sail Box is an expansion of the Harbour Coffee Company and includes brunch items on its menu.

They are two of six new restaurants to open along the arm, all in upcycled shipping containers.

Julia Riley decided to launch Le Coq after wanting to open a farm shop on her and her husband’s home farm.

“I love hens; chickens really fascinate me and eventually my husband relented and said that I could start up a new venture, but it was not to be on our land,” she said.

“I was walking the dogs here around the harbour and saw the sign on the containers they were looking for new businesses. So, I came to Harbour House to get more information.

“I love anything to do with food, and I thought why not? The harbour team gives you an opportunity, and a space, helps you to kit out that space and lets you create a business.”

Shaun, Charlie and Phyllis make up some of the team working with Mrs Riley. Shaun is the chef, Charlie is front of house, and Phyllis makes sure everything is in working order.

The trio worked together at Saga and when Shaun met Mrs Riley, he wanted his team to come along with him.

“We’re going to deliver all of this at a reasonable price because I want Le Coq to be a family restaurant where everyone can come and have fun,” Mrs Riley said.

“The beauty of my box, apart from the stunning view, is that you can eat inside, outside in the sun or takeaway from the window. This means that you can have rotisserie chicken all year round.

“The harbour area has been fascinating to watch over the past few years. It has grown so much and the thing I love is that the focus has been on helping people grow and develop an idea. You could be a tiny business, just starting out, and the harbour team support you in growing that business.

“I am a doctor and work a lot with the NHS which is full of bureaucracy. It is so hard to get anything done quickly. Here, someone has an idea, and if it is accepted then it is all systems go.”

Sail Box is run by Mark Babins who also runs Harbour Coffee Company, Sole Kitchen and The Fish Shack, all in Folkestone.

“I like to offer food of a quality and standard that I would want to eat if I were going out. So that’s my plan, and it seems to be working,” Mr Babins said.

”The next thing with the harbour arm is that you really need to have space to sit down inside.

“This is a fantastic venue, whatever the weather, but sometimes you need to experience that weather from inside rather than out.”

Sail Box currently focuses on an inventive brunch and lunch menu, but will be exploring an expanded menu of seaside pub classics soon as well as roasts.

Sail Box is open Monday to Friday, 10am-5pm and 9am-6pm on Saturday and Sunday.

Le Coq is open Wednesday to Sunday and Bank Holidays, 12pm until 9pm.

They join the expanding food and drink offerings at the harbour arm, which is visited by thousands of people each year.

It is home to an outdoor cinema screen, food and drink trucks, mini golf, restaurants and a vintage market.
