Pictures from the carriageway showed stationary traffic and smoke billowing in the distance. Vehicles are now back on the move.

One person warned others on social media, saying: “Do not come down onto the M20 junction 9 London bound to 8! All lanes blocked and massive fire ahead.”

Traffic was also reported to be slow coastbound as drivers looked at the blaze.

Motorist Matt Gowen said: “Fire on M20 2 miles west of Jn 9 londonbound. Fire, police and traffic officers in attendance.

“Coastbound now open again as fire is out. Traffic officers were holding the traffic because the black smoke was making visibility awful.”
