Temporary speed restrictions have been put in place on certain Southeastern rail services.

Kent’s main rail operator says monitoring carried out by Network Rail staff has detected a problem under the tracks between Dover and Folkestone.

It comes after the company said the county had faced the “wettest February in 200 years”.

Southeastern posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, earlier that regular checks are being carried out on the line and a temporary speed restriction is in place due to “detected ground movement” affecting the line.

Similarly, staff have made some service changes so that “reliable and robust train services” can be provided for passengers while Network Rail staff access the work needed.

This means that Folkestone West services are reduced off-peak towards Dover, and most trains from Ramsgate to Charing Cross will leave stations between Sandwich and Dover two minutes earlier, running as planned from Folkestone Central.

This is not the first time train drivers have faced speed restrictions. In March train drivers in Folkestone and Dover had to go slower than usual as a promenade near a track moved following heavy rainfall.

The uneven surfaces were spotted at Folkestone Warren, affecting rail services between the town and Dover.

Meanwhile, services have been disrupted at Northfleet due to a failure of the electricity supply.

It means fewer trains than normal can call at the station.

Southeastern says UK Power Networks are working to resolve the issue which is expected to be ongoing until 12.30pm.

It comes after services were disrupted yesterday after a tree blocked the railway at Meopham.

No trains could run on the Sole Street Line and services running between Victoria and Rochester are being delayed and may be revised or cancelled.
