Box wants to make it easier for businesses in Europe and Asia to comply with local storage requirements, so its new program, Box Zones, will let customers use Amazon Web Services and IBM Cloud to store data in Germany, Ireland, Singapore, and Japan.

“Not every company has been able to move to the cloud as aggressively as they would like. Barriers still remain for some of the largest or most regulated global enterprises,” Box CEO Aaron Levie wrote in a blog post. “For instance, hospitals in France or financial services firms in Germany face strict regulations around where their files are stored, leaving them with a limited set of options, and keeping many of these enterprises stuck on legacy infrastructure.”

Starting next month, Box customers in Germany, Ireland, Japan, and Singapore can tap into Amazon S3 for their storage needs, while IBM Cloud will be an option in Europe and Asia later this year. There will be an “additional fee” for Box Zones, which Box did not specify, but TechCrunch reports that Box will bill for everying in one invoice, so customers won’t have to pay Amazon or IBM directly.

“We believe customers should have the freedom to choose where and how their data is stored,” said Terry Wise, vice president of AWS Worldwide Partner Ecosystem. “With Box Zones leveraging [Amazon S3], customers can better meet the highest levels of security and regulatory compliance required in their respective geographies.”

“As enterprises turn to cloud as an innovation platform, data is at the center,” said Robert LeBlanc, senior vice president of IBM Cloud. “Box Zones on the IBM Cloud…will provide a platform for clients who prefer to store data in-country for performance, security or other advantages.”
